Steel Drum Band

Sunrise Elementary school has had a Steel Drum band for more than 25 years. Michael Bento, a former music teacher at Sunrise, started one of the first elementary school steel bands in Washington State. He was recognized nationally for his work with kids on steel pans.

Our current director Gary Gibson created the band Panduo in 1996 with Michael Bento. Mr. Gibson is an accomplished musician, composer, and instructor. He has won many awards for his work.

Mr. Gibson's goals for Steel Drum band are:

1. Provide a rich musical and cultural educational activity through musicmaking in the steel band.

2. Provide a safe, fun after-school activity.

3. Create a "team" ethic in the bands.
